Make Bible Study FUN Again!
I’m not going to lie, I get into Bible study ruts where my heart is not in the right place when I sit down to study– I’m actually in one of those ruts as I write this so I thought I would share my tips, not only to give a boost to any others that might be in the same boat but also give a little encouragement if you feel guilt when this inevitably comes around.
If (like myself) you are getting down on yourself for just not being in the mood to study The Word, I’m here to tell you it’s normal and there’s a way to turn things around!
Let’s face it, if something feels like a chore, the odds of you putting your best effort into it are very slim, so how can you take something from being a chore to something you look forward to?
Here’s how I go about it.
5 Tips to Get You Excited to Study Scripture Again
Switch it up– if you are used to sitting in the same room, in the same position, it may help to spice things up a bit. Pick a different room, go outside if the weather allows or maybe even go to a different location altogether. I know there are busy ladies out there that find it hard to get a spare minute of quiet in their homes so if you have the opportunity, try stopping by a park on your way to or from work if time permits. Although if going somewhere different entirely is not an option, try changing the room to help it feel a little more indulgent– put on some soothing background music, change the lighting to be more relaxing or if you’re anything like me, having a “special something” can get me excited. What do I mean by “special something”? So when I need a little boost, I have a go-to “special candle” I light when I need a little boost, the scent is comforting and it grounds me in the moment. I only pull it out when I need a little something to lift me up so it has an enhancing feel to it.
As one of my favorite authors, Gretchen Rubin would say, “Beautiful tools make work a joy.” Now I know the point of all of this is to not have your study time feel like “work” but you get the idea… When we have tools that bring us a little lift in spirit, it makes any task that much more enjoyable. Try a new cute set of highlights, markers, or pens. Or even better– a new study notebook, cute stationery, or buy yourself a fresh new Bible altogether.
There are times when not having an end goal in mind makes studying hard for me. I’ll go into my study time and I just start to go through the motions– flying through the chapters rather than focusing on what I’m getting out of the scripture, so having a study plan can take the repetition trap out of your studies. Explore a devotional or study plan online, if you are tactile like me, having a physical copy of a devotional can help improve the experience or if you prefer the electronic version, the YouVersion Bible App has endless devotionals– and they’re free!
Having someone accompany you can really help keep you motivated. This could be following along together or just having someone else as your accountability partner. You can be on different study plans but encourage each other or you can even share little snip-its of what you each are learning and/or swap scripture verses.
Last but certainly not least, bring the scripture to life by turning your study into illustrations. Ahh this brings me so much joy! The Bible is irrefutably a literal masterpiece – full of beautiful depictions and imagery. As you read The Word, take a moment to stretch, color, or paint what comes to mind. It will give you a boost to express your creative side but it also helps the scriptures to stick out in your mind after expressing it through your art.
(If you want to tackle two of these steps at once, try buying a beautiful new sketchbook to use as your new scripture art book 😀)
There you have it, my tips to get excited about Bible Study again. After laying them all out here, I’ve taken my own advice and picked two of the tips which I shared here. 1) Splurge on Beautiful Tools: I ordered myself a new Bible cover from Amazon, I’ll leave the link to the one I got here, I’m loving it already! Not only does it hold my Bible and study tools but it has the capacity to hold the book I’m reading too.
2) Illustrating the Scripture: I’m not sure why I don’t take advantage of this more, I guess because as a result of the world we live in, we’re always ready to move on to the next thing so I simply don’t give myself enough time to really let The Word sink in. After just a day of this, I can already feel my passion for The Word recharging my soul.
I hope these tips helped you, if so let me know by tagging me on Instagram, @terazonastudio– I’ll be sharing some of my scripture illustrations there too 🙂
